Making Waves

Hello and welcome to my new experimental blog! For many years I have been researching the healing use of sound in seeking to understand the world condition and the true nature of human suffering. By weaving together studies in Buddhism, sound cymatics, diet, neurology and cellular systems, a platform for discussion and comments will be created.

There are moments in life when everything changes, when the world looks completely different, and when a calling is heard for the very first time. As a teenager, I read a book by Steven Halpern called Tuning the Human Instrument – Keeping Yourself in Sound Health. The idea that “properly chosen sounds” could bring about physical and psychic harmony was a revelation for me!

To become consciously “soundsitive” is to see and respect the body as a bio-resonator. Through kinesiology, it was found that body muscles tested weak to certain rhythms and those rhythms were not good for the heart or nervous system. Most people are not aware of this or that the body will rectify the imbalance if given a chance.

Steven wrote, “most people have never learned how to listen to music in a healing way….very few have trained in the therapeutic aspects of composition and performance”. Crucially, he also said, “music, as an energy, can work on the entire energy body of an individual and speak in the vibration language, the mother tongue, to the various organs and systems, to help bring that body into physical alignment and attunement with its own perfect pattern of perfection”.

My training as a classical pianist and composer felt like a parallel path to this. As a musician, I have always felt like I am in two very separate worlds! Why is that you might ask? Because traditional music was never recognised as “an energy”, so much of its dimensionality and potential was missing for me. Sound formulas, rules, commercial agendas made music into a “material” that could be bought and sold without ever entering its subtle mysteries.

When we read…..between the lines….the space becomes the powerful and meaningful place to be. This intuitive knowing needs to be validated as “a reality” that we all live and operate from. Science is now allowing us to see on screen what we felt in our hearts all along. But crucial life moments place us back in that space of attunement and resonance. It is all within but it takes years to truly trust this!

What do you think of this?

Music is…..

Man Understanding Spiritual Information Clearly
– Kenneth Gamble

This is a very loaded statement. Where do we understand from? What is the information? How can this be done clearly?

For me…..this is the tip of the iceberg. One has to acknowledge music as sacred energy being absorbed by a sacred body to even begin to understand what “information” is being communicated vibrationally. Without respect being given to either sound or body, the potential information is not absorbed. Interestingly, the ancient Egyptians said anger is considered to be a state of “missing information”.

We live in a very volatile world now. Our technology has made us more aware of tension and violence which also feeds daily into our bodies and energy.

My argument is (rightly or wrongly) that if the sound models we have been listening to for the last 500 years vibrationally worked, why do we still have hundreds of wars a year brewing? http://www.warsintheworld.com/?page=static1258254223

Coming back full circle……perhaps we have yet to create through “properly chosen sounds” which will help alleviate the tensions and toxic stresses of this world?

Without understanding spiritual information clearly, we are missing the point of our arts because the subtle energy is not being acknowledged or cultivated for our harmonious good.

So it makes me wonder……has “true” music really begun yet?

I invite your comments!

  1. Well done Beverley for launching ‘Between the Lines’. I am sure this tentative start will lead on to a time of discoveries. With each chapter the book will be written, or perhaps re-written, on M.U.S.I.C!

An experimental blog perhaps, however I hope it will be a great rock tossed into a calm sea creating wonderful waves.

New beginnings, new words and new ideas. Alison x

    • Many thanks Alison! Learning how to write a blog is a learning curve. I intend to develop themes which can be structured into a book. The feedback loop is very important in clarifying ideas and presenting them with some skill and humour! There is much more to come so…stay tuned!

  2. This is a great start Beverley. I am excited to see what is to come!

To add, perhaps the reason that we have not found universal ‘true’ music (and why it may not be possible) is that people react to music in different ways and find harmony and beauty in different things. For example, one of my Grandad’s most beloved pieces was Ravel’s Bolero, but I really can’t stand listening to it. Perhaps there is no one over-arching model which could alleviate everyday tension and toxic stress.
Additionally maybe only we can create the music that will result in this euphoria, musicians will never be able to suit each individual listener, which is why I adore playing the piano; I am able to create music relative to what I am feeling and with a necessary tempo and dynamic range to suit my needs and relieve tension. This is the issue which the commercial music industry will never overcome, it attempts to appeal to too large an audience. On the other hand, maybe it is our musical instruments which need to change, maybe we need to escape the restriction of set metre and rhythm…who knows?!

Anyway, keep up the good work!
    Finlay

    • Thank you Finlay for your very good points. We are all unique and different so we are going to hear things in our own way. My exploration will be looking at what unifies the human race. We are all made of cells! This I feel has been taken for granted. We respond to vibrations through our cells so the state of our cells affects our response. Food affects the receptivity of the cells. The old saying “you are what you eat” contains a lot of truth. My deepest instincts are telling me there is a truer music…a new sound architecture…that will feed the cells with vibrations that don’t build toxic stress. It has been a lifelong quest to create this music. It all depends on how I treat my cells whether those resonances will be found for they (the cells) are the “real instrument”….the journey continues….

  32. Thank you so much for your very interesting tribute to the debate about music therapy, Beverley.
So, the point is: which kind of sounds can push or drive our brain cells to release those endorphins that reduce pain? Whereas on the one hand we could get excited and emotionally involved or stimulated by listening to a certain type o genre of music on the other hand we can experience some physical relief by hearing some selected and assembled sounds and frequencies. In my opinion, unfortunately, not too much has been done from the mere medical point of view yet and there’s still a lot of work to do on the side of scientific research

    • Thank you for the question Eugene….it is a big one! I have thought about this a lot. The “music” of the future may work on a biological level but may not sound like music as we know it. I have a feeling that sound that works well with the cells is not as beautiful to the ear but might heal us in many levels. Perhaps this new music might be used for treatment only (like taking vitamins). But then the next question is…..would our lifestyles and “regular” music then undo the healing and damage us vibrationally again!?

  33. Right here is the perfect site for anyone who hopes to find out about this topic.

You realize so much its almost tough to argue with you (not that I really will need
toHaHa). You definitely put a fresh spin on a topic which has been written about for
    ages. Excellent stuff, just great!

    • You are right how complicated the topic is! It is easy to just say anything but I like to sit with it and test my theories. I was hoping to do a monthly blog but life keeps adding more layers which do eventually go into the blog….new one is being drafted as I write. Thanks again for your comments.

  34. You actually help it become seem really easy together with your presentation but I
find this topic to be actually something which I feel I would never understand.
It appears to be too complex and extremely broad in my opinion. I’m looking
forward for your next post, I’ll try to find the hang of this!

    • It is indeed complex but I have been delayering this for years and can hopefully present the core of it in a simple way. Thanks for your comments!
